Small-sized luggage (55 cm)

No. The 55 cm refers to the height; width and depth also count. Air France requires 55 x 35 x 25 cm, Ryanair 55 x 40 x 20 cm with the Priority option, and easyJet 56 x 45 x 25 cm with the large cabin bag option. Weight is also limited, from 10 to 15 kg depending on the airline.

A 55 cm suitcase generally holds enough outfits for three to five days: a few tops, two pairs of trousers, a pair of shoes, and a toiletry bag. By rolling the clothes and using a zippered extension, it can last for a week in the summer.

A suitcase with a depth of 25 cm, like the Air France sizer, offers more volume than a 20 cm model of the same height. It is suitable for traditional airlines. For low-cost carriers with a 55 x 40 x 20 cm size limit, however, it exceeds the permitted depth.

Measure the suitcase upright, wheels included, from the floor to the top of the retracted handle. Then measure the width and depth, with the front pockets full. Compare these three measurements to your airline's dimensions: manufacturers sometimes indicate the size excluding wheels.

Yes, you can check a 55 cm suitcase if your ticket includes checked baggage. This is useful for bringing back liquids over 100 ml or items prohibited in the cabin, such as knives or tools.
